Many people think good teeth means going to the dentist, getting the fillings done, having the tartar removed or finishing braces, and that is that. From what we see in the clinic every day, it does not work like that. Good teeth are not the result of one treatment. They come from what you do after it. This article explains why ongoing care matters and what you can do every day without much effort.
Why one treatment is not enough
A visit to the dentist repairs damage that has already happened: a filling for a cavity, a scaling for tartar that has built up. But the cause of those problems is plaque, which forms again every day from food and the bacteria in your mouth. If you let things slide after treatment, a new cavity, a new layer of tartar or inflamed gums can be back before long.
Think of dental care as a long-term investment. A little attention every day saves you from another round of major repairs.
What ongoing care means
Ongoing care does not mean coming to the clinic all the time. It means two things working together: steady habits at home, and periodic check-ups with a dentist to make sure everything is still in good shape.
It is like looking after a car. You do not wait for it to break down. You change the oil, get it serviced and wash it regularly. Teeth are no different.
Five habits that keep teeth healthy
1. Brush properly, twice a day. Brush in the morning and before bed with a fluoride toothpaste, for about two minutes. Cover every surface of every tooth, especially along the gum line, and brush your tongue gently to reduce the bacteria that cause bad breath.
2. Floss or use an interdental brush every day. Toothbrush bristles do not reach between the teeth, which is exactly where decay and tartar like to start. Floss or an interdental brush once a day removes the food and plaque hiding there. If you find it awkward, ask us; we will show you how at the clinic.
3. Use mouthwash as a supplement. Mouthwash helps reduce bacteria in places the brush misses. It is a supplement only, though. It cannot replace brushing or flossing.
4. See the dentist every six months. A check-up and scaling every six months lets us spot early decay or gum inflammation while it is still small, easier and cheaper to treat than once it has spread. Polishing also removes surface stains, so your teeth look cleaner. If you are prone to decay, we may suggest a fluoride treatment as well.
5. Avoid the habits that harm teeth. Cut down on sweets, soft drinks and sticky foods. If you do have them, rinse with water or brush afterwards. If you smoke or drink a lot of tea or coffee, stains build up faster than average, so pay extra attention to brushing and keep your scaling appointments.
What you get back
- Strong teeth that do not decay again. Ongoing care protects against both cavities and gum disease, and helps your existing fillings and crowns last longer.
- A smile you are confident in. Clean teeth, no build-up, fresher breath.
- Lower costs. Scaling and polishing at Tooth Boutique is 1,000 to 2,000 baht, with a fluoride treatment for 500 more. That is far less than the root canal or crown a deep cavity needs once it has been left too long. These are starting prices; we confirm the exact fee after examining your teeth. See the price list.
Good teeth, then, are not about one big treatment. They are small habits done every day, plus a visit every six months.
