Some lower wisdom teeth have roots running close to the nerve canal. A 3D image shows which side the roots pass and how close they are, so the surgical plan and the risks discussed with you match your actual anatomy.
You see the same picture the dentist sees
The dentist opens the scan on screen, turns it, and points to the problem and the reason behind the recommendation. If you are referred to a hospital for surgery, you can take the image file to the surgeon there.

How it works

First, is it actually needed?
The dentist examines you and looks at any existing films first. A dental CT is taken only when the result will change the plan — for many cases a panoramic or small film is enough.

The scan
You stand or sit with your head resting on a support while the machine makes one turn around you. It takes a short time. You do not have to hold your mouth open, and there are no needles.

Reviewing it together
The images come up chairside. The dentist moves through the slices, takes the measurements with you watching, and explains what they see and what it means for your case.

Plan, or referral
You get the options and the costs before any treatment starts. If the case belongs in a hospital theatre, the dentist refers you and sends the image file along for the surgeon.
